The turtle in many cultures is known to have carried the earth on it’s back. In Hawaii the name for the turtle is the same name given to the earth Honu. For me I have often found that when I have surfed in the ocean, the turtle would come to me as a kind of totem, offering wisdom and a deeper connection with my environment. In 2004 I co-founded an organisation called Turtle Conservation Project in which I raised awareness for environmental responsibility and sustainability and donated proceeds from funds raised to turtle conservation. This painting is a tribute to these beautiful creatures who survive insurmountable odds from the moment they hatch into adulthood. Since only 1 in 10,000 green turtles mature to adulthood.
